World No1 Scott
Brash (GBR) edged closer to the
championship lead tonight winning
his third Grand Prix of the 2015
season riding the phenomenal Hello
Sanctos.
Scott took the
extraordinary triple win of the
season under floodlights in the big
grass arena in Cascais, Estoril,
which delivered sporting drama as
many of the top 30 riders retired or
were eliminated in the €300,000
Grand Prix.
Speaking after
his victory Scott said: “Sanctos
loves Estoril. He jumped phenomenal
again today. I am delighted with him
but we still have to keep going to
beat Luciana.”
Scott is now only
32 points behind ranking leader
Luciana Diniz (POR), who had four
faults in the second round at the
high Mercedes vertical to the dismay
of her many fans in the Portuguese
crowd. His masterful round on the
Olympic gold medal winning Hello
Sanctos once again left a
star-studded field of the world’s
best in his wake.
Only a short
distance from the shores of the
Atlantic, it was a truly
international field starting in the
Grand Prix with 16 nations
represented, including competitors
from Japan, Morocco, Mexico and the
Ukraine. The challenging but fair
course, designed by Frank
Rothenberger, allowed many of the
world's top combinations to showcase
their talent and agility, as the
packed grandstands watched in
anticipation. The first round saw
many top names, including Daniel
Deusser (GER) and Lauren Hough (USA)
fail to go through, over what was a
full on international track with
fences at maximum proportions,
including spreads of 1,70m that
would test any champion combination.
Despite the stiff
test, fifteen clears went through to
the second round, with three more on
four faults, and the scene was set
as the action moved up a gear.
During the second
round the high Mercedes vertical
caught out a number of riders
including Luciana and Sheikh Ali Bin
Khalid Al Thani (QAT). Ludger
Beerbaum (GER) jumped a masterful
round on the incredible Chaman but
uncharacteristically miscalculated
the time allowed and picked up a
time penalty.
Just four went
through to the jump-off, as the
floodlights lit the arena. In the
end Scott topped the podium with
Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al Sharbatly
in second and Ireland’s Greg
Broderick in third. Christian
Ahlmann (GER) was the fourth rider
who qualified for the jump off
however was unlucky when his grey
stallion Cornado II knocked out one
of the bricks in the wall.
The Championship
Tour now returns to France to visit
Chantilly for the tenth round of the
2015 season, from the 17-19th July.
Duarte Nobre
Guedes, President of Longines Global
Champions Tour of Cascais, Estoril:
“Ten years ago, my friend Jan Tops
told me here that we should do
something for equestrian sport. It’s
amazing what he has done since that
time, the way he has improved the
sport. Thank you very much to the
Longines Global Champions Tour team;
it’s a fantastic event and I’m very
proud to be part of this family."
Jan Tops,
President and Founder of the
Longines Global Champions Tour: "10
years ago, I fell in love with this
show; I loved the arena and the
everything here. Like I always say,
it’s one of our favorite
destinations. I think Duarte has
become a great friend. We can always
count of him with the way he runs
the event here. Also he knows that
the event here has to be different
than the other more traditional
shows. Here it’s about great sport
but also charm and the perfect
atmosphere.
"Scott is pushing
harder and harder every week. Now he
is on Luciana’s heels and I think
they are the two to watch until the
end of the season in Doha. Of course
there are still 5 more legs to go
and anything could happen.”
Luciana Diniz,
ranking leader: "I must say that I’m
glad to be here and that I loved
everything about the show. It’s very
special here and I congratulate the
whole team for that. The public in
Estoril are incredible: they give me
energy, they jump with me, they live
the round with me. It’s very, very
special. I was very motivated so I
wanted to be on the podium tonight.
I’m very happy to be still in the
lead. Scott and I will do our best
and give you a good time in the next
weeks, so watch us and enjoy!"
Scott Brash,
winner: “Santcos likes it here.
Every time he's jumped here he's
been on the podium, he's just a
wonderful horse and it's a privilege
to be riding him. I need to enjoy
him while I have him as he's one in
a lifetime. We've got a great team
behind us; great owners, great
horses, great staff and this is very
very important to our success. You
only see me sitting here but there's
a massive team behind us and it's
thanks to all of them that we're
doing well this year.”
Abdullah Al
Sharbatly, 2nd Place: “My horse was
amazing, it's his sixth show, and he
always jumps clear and is always
first or second; I really like him.
I never thought he could jump a
CSI5* Grand Prix and it's the first
one he's jumped in his life. So I'm
really happy, thanks to God and
congratulations to Scott – he
deserved to win and did an amazing
job. I'm happy for him as I am for
myself.”
Greg Broderick,
3rd place: "I was delighted with my
horse and that I was given the
opportunity to come and jump here
after we jumped double clear in St
Gallen. My horse is just nine years
old so he hasn’t a lot of experience
at this level. I knew Scott was able
to go very fast so I just tried to
be quick and luckily we were clear.
It’s really nice for my first
Longines Global Champions Tour to be
on the podium! There are not as many
Irish horses at the top level than
there used to be so I’m glad that my
horse has been jumping so well for
the whole year. I want to thank all
my team and I’m very lucky to ride
this fantastic horse."

Emanuele Gaudiano
(ITA) and Admara 2 claimed a
fantastic victory tonight in the
CSI5* 1.50/55m feature class in
Cascais, Estoril, making them ones
to watch in Saturday's pivotal Grand
Prix - round nine in the 2015
Championship. Second went to the
superb Marco Kutscher (GER) who was
just tenths of a second off the win
and 3rd to Lauren Hough (USA) with
her eye-catching gelding Cornet 39.
As the sun faded with a stunning
purple haze over the gorgeous arena
in Portugal, the local crowd showed
cheered in admiration after an
exhilarating jump-off which saw
riders from 18 different countries
competing in the first round.
The first day of
high-calibre competitions took place
against the sunny skies, with the
backdrop of the spectacular
Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais,
Estoril setting the scene as riders
took to the grass arena for the
first time in competition. Gregory
Wathelet (BEL) and Egano van het
Slogenhof were the first to claim
honours, after a superb win in the
CSI5* 1.45m seeing them flying high
and starting the weekend in style.
Abdullah Al Sharbatly (KSA) and
Domingo took a close second place,
with Italy's Emanuele Gaudiano and
Cocoshynsky taking the third spot.
The feature CSI5*
of the day, presented by
Mercedes-Benz Portugal, commenced as
the floodlights lit up the beautiful
grass arena, and VIPs dined in the
luxurious hospitality with the
perfect view of the course. 45
combinations took part in the 1.50 /
1.55m course designed by Frank
Rothenberger to compete for a share
of 153,000€ prize money. The time
allowed caught a few out, but pushed
the riders to showcase their speed
and ability in the larger 110m x 70m
arena which leant itself to a fast
paced first round. The combination
across the middle of the arena - a
large, wide oxer in the middle of
the combination - caused many
problems. Of the 45 starters, 16
made it through to the jump off.
First to go clear
in the final round was Taizo
Sugitani (JPN), who jumped a tidy
and careful 43.29 with his bay 16
year old gelding Avenzio 3. With
many riders taking chances, the
fences tumbled, with the oxer at the
end of the double causing the most
challenges as the riders raced
against the clock towards the final
fences. Gregory Wathelet (BEL) was
the next to fly clear, galloping to
the fences with Eldorado van het
Vijverhof putting in a brave and
honest round, and finishing a full
two seconds ahead. The jump-off
rocked up a gear as Marco Kutscher
(GER) took a fantastic cutting line
back to the final oxer and brought
it home in 38.39. Lauren Hough (USA)
was next to follow with the
unusually marked grey gelding Cornet
39 and finished a touch behind the
leading time in 39.76.
Constant Van
Paesschen (BEL) made a valiant
effort with Ralphy Utopia de
Ransbeck riding a shorter stride
39.89 and finishing in fourth place
overall. Second last to go, Emanuele
Gaudiano (ITA) showcased his
incredible pace and talent with the
sensational dark bay gelding, Admara
2. This was their first Tour since
their success in Monaco a couple of
weeks ago, where Emanuele won the
Massimo Dutti CSI5* Trophy, and came
third in the Monaco Grand Prix.
Shaving vital seconds off the
corners and showcasing true pace and
bravery from his ten year old
gelding, the fearless pair crossed
the line in 38.24 to the delight of
the roaring crowd.
Saturday sees the
final day of competition take place,
with the Longines Global Champions
Tour Grand Prix of Cascais, Estoril
starting at 18:30 local time. Watch
the 9th round of the 2015
Championship Tour live from Cascais,
Estoril on
GCT TV, Equidia Life and
ClassHorseTV from 18.30, from the
second round at 19:30 on beIN Sport

The best riders
in the world from 18 different
countries will head to the lively
coastal town of Cascais, Estoril, in
the beautiful Portugal, to compete
in the 9th leg of the Longines
Global Champions Tour. As the
Championship Tour kicks up another
gear towards the second half of the
season, top athletes from America,
Ukraine, Japan, Morocco, Colombia
and Ireland, to name a few, will
take centre stage from the 9th -
11th July, as the battle for the
title intensifies. With 502,000€ in
total on offer in the CSI5*
competitions over the course of the
two days, there's set to be
unmissable action and a showcase of
show jumping talent at its finest as
the very best in the world take to
the stunning 110m x 70m grass arena.
Current ranking
leader Luciana Diniz (POR) will look
to capitalise at her home Grand
Prix, and after another successful
round in Paris she has extended her
points lead to 44 from second place
man and world number 1, Scott Brash
(GBR), who will also be in
attendance and sure to be raising
the temperature on the fight for the
win. Sheikh Ali Bin Khalid Al Thani
(QAT), currently fourth in the
ranking battle, will also be well
placed to increase his championship
title chances. Ireland's young
Bertram Allen (IRL) will also be
back and hoping to continue his
phenomenal form after making history
as the youngest ever Longines Global
Champions Tour Grand Prix winner.
Olympic gold
medallist Ben Maher (GBR) is another
rider who will be looking to
maintain his top form following an
exceptional joint win in the final
class in Paris. The split screen
video comparing the two jump-off
rounds has become a social media hit
after he and Karim El Zoghby (EGY)
crossed the line at exactly the same
time to take the win; incredibly
unusual in this high level of
competition. With the likes of
double Tour Champion Edwina
Tops-Alexander (AUS), Daniel Deusser
(GER), John Whitaker (GBR),
Hans-Dieter Dreher (GER), Kevin
Staut (FRA), Pilar Lucrecia Cordon
(ESP), Lauren Hough (USA) and Ludger
Beerbaum (GER) riding in the high
profile competition on the
Portuguese Riviera, it's set to be
an exciting round of the
Championship Tour.
The wonderful
parkland of Cascais is transformed
for two days of high-calibre show
jumping which last year saw two-time
Tour Champion Scott Brash (GBR) take
top honours in the Grand Prix - his
second win of the 2014 season, and
pivotal turning point towards his
Championship win.
Cascais, Estoril
has grown into a renowned
international destination for
world-class sport, hosting the
America’s Cup sailing, golf, tennis,
surfing and motorsports. Blessed
with a fine climate most of the
year, visitors flock to the coast to
soak up the sun and enjoy the great
landscape and attractions. Cascais
became the summer destination of
choice for Portuguese nobility in
the 1900s - it has since become a
lively international beach resort.
Down the road, Estoril’s famous
casino is thought to be where Ian
Fleming came up with the idea for
Casino Royale, as he stalked
Yugoslav double agent Dusko Popov at
its tables.
In Portugal there
are palaces, museums and national
parks to visit and the capital city,
Lisbon, is only a short distance
away with its top-class hotels,
restaurants and bars. The Grand Prix
of Cascais, Estoril is sure to be an
exciting event, as riders fight for
supremacy in the overall 2015
Championship Ranking.
