En Suisse romande
aussi nous avons notre Fête des
Ânes: elle rassemble tous les amis
de cet humble serviteur de l'homme
depuis 1999, et se tiendra cette
année encore à Berolle, entre Bière
et Montricher. Un programme très
riche aura pour points d'orgue un
cortège le dimanche 30 août à 11h00,
et un fameux gymkhana qui verra
s'affronter d'habiles meneurs et
cavaliers. A noter aussi en vedette:
la présentation d'un attelage de 25
ânes digne du "Guiness" !!
Rendez-vous donc à Berolle dimanche
30 août pour fêter la fin de
vacances réussies par un événement
exceptionnel du folklore romand.

With a certain delay
in respect to last year’s election and
verdict which took place during the
CHI-Geneva at Palexpo, the Jury of this
second edition of the « Horse of the
World Special Award » only pronounced on
the occasion of the « Mercedes-CSI
Zurich 2014 » at the Hallenstadion in
the Swiss banking capital.
Questioned about the
reasons for having thus displaced the
date of this announcement, Jamil
Boukarabila put it this way : « It is,
of course, with great regret on our part
that the horse show in Geneva was no
longer able to be the venue of this
announcement. We are obliged to follow
the change which indeniably puts, from
now on, the great horse show of Zurich
as one of the major events of the
international scene in the discipline,
in front of all the Swiss horse shows.
The engagement and visibility of the
very first sponsors at Zurich,
Mercedes-Benz for a long time, but also
Rolex until last year since associated
with the final of the World Show-Jumping
Cup, and so many others, also convinced
us to make this choice. Even so it is
necessary to point out that probably, in
order to remain in the Swiss Romande, we
would have opted for the LONGINE GLOBAL
CHAMPIONS TOUR of Jan Tops at Lausanne,
if it was not held so late in the
season.
At this beginning of
2014, horse lovers, and enthusiasts of
Equidae in general, welcomed with
surprise but enthusiasm the announcement
of the result of this prize for the
second year awarded to an original
enterprise where Equines are kings,
above all economics interests and the
recommendations of the usual circles
engaged in competitions at the highest
level. The Beni-Ammar Festival, but ther
also its courageous, innovative Moroccan
inhabitants in the spirit of their
enterprise are thus the winners of this
second « Horses of the World Special
Award ».

Here
is the official annoucement of
the jury of Horses of the World,
made public at the awarding of
the prizes of the Mercedes
Classic-Longines FEI World Cup
(which crowned Toulago and his
rider Pius Schwizer, who again
entered the Top Ten) :
« Horses of the World has the
great Honour this year of
awarding its prize also, to all
the participants, contributors,
creators and visitors to the
Beni-Ammar Festival, and,
through themselves, to the
wonderful Moroccan people who
managed to reconcile Modernity
with the « poor parent » of
Grand Prix horses, doubtlessly
the people of today with most
deserving four-legged companions
of their ancestors. And all
this, in the framework of a
great cultural assembly, in a
small city on a mountain side,
that of Moulay Driss Zerhoune,
near to the imperial Moroccan
town of Meknès. This recognition
on the part of our media is thus
to reward the Mohammed Bellemou
cousins, choristers of the
Moroccan Culture and protectors
of the most injustly contempted
animal in the course of our
history ».

The first weekend of
July, in the nice large village of
Moulay Driss Zerhoune, there takes place
the 11th edition of a festival which has
acquired its letters of nobility and
which is talked about very far away, in
Europe, in the African countries, the
Persian Gulf and, of course, in the
whole Kingdom of Morocco.
Horse lovers (therefore also donkey
lovers !!), nature lovers and above all
lovers of authenticity with the little
touch of exotic and adventure that is
necessary to discover Morocco off the
beaten track, men, women and children of
the whole world are invited, as every
year, to take part in this extraordinary
moment of conviviality.
In Morocco, the horse is a royal attribute

But how, starting
from the horse can you get to the donkey
without ridiculing it, you will ask ?
The answer is very simple : in Morocco,
at least as much as elsewhere, horse
meetings are for a select public or are
celebrated in private circles, often
attributed to princes and princesses.
Impenetratable ! From this has come this
thirst for adventure, for freedom which
has gripped us, looking for a reality
which touches the common people in
Morocco.
The donkey : a childhood friend and companion in misery

We have therefore chosen to take the
very sinuous ways, from the Imperial
Town of Meknès and its rich farming
region (The flower of teh farming
developmenet programme « Green Morocco »
undertaken by the Moroccan authorities)
to get to the crest of the montanous
circle of Roman ruins of Volubilis, and
then above this high place of pilgrinage
there is the « darih » (mausoleum) of
Moulay Driss Zerhoune, and then still
further towards the interior of the land
, to the feet of the hamlet of Beni
Ammar. A little disinherited village ?
This would be without knowing the spirit
of initiative of its inhabitants, and in
particular of the Belemou family to whom
we owe this so sympathetic and from now
on greatly publicised « Donkey Festival
of Beni Ammar » !
The Belemou cousins : a doctor and a journalist poet

Both are named
Mohammed, both are involved 1000% in the
organisation of the donkey festival. It
is not easy therefore to distinguish
Mohammed Belemou from Mohammed Belemou,
i fit wasn’t that one is doctor and the
other a journalist. But they both have
this faculty of transmitting a
formidable positive energy in favour of
the Beni Ammar Festival. But be careful
! Make no mistake : no satirical
representation of the donkey is
tolerated here, just the contrary !!
The Belemou wanted to make a stirriing
homage to the donkey, this companion of
the miseries of humanity, he who, since
time immemorial has shared the fate of
the most humble, by accepting on his
back the heaviest burdens, never
flinching before any of the most
thankless taskes. This is why it was
really worth dedicating a Festival to
donkeys and their infinite goodness.
The donkey must be respected, cared for and protected

In the Festival
programme, there are bouts of all kinds,
, competitions of morphology, docility,
address and velocity : each has his
speciality and the champions are
numerous in all the different categories
!
However during each appearance, each
confrontation, the donkeys are checked
by a very competent veterinary
committee. A college of veterinaries
ensures that the donkeys are in good
health, that they are not limping or
injured. And above all participants who
mistreat their animals are disqualified
unobligingly !
Intellectuals from all over the world will be present
at the Festival of Beni Ammar 2013

To underline still
more the respect of men for animals ,
their eternel servants, it has been
decided that the „Festival of Donkeys of
Beni Ammar-Moulay Driss Zerhoune“ will
also be a cultural festival. So, each,
year, painters writers, poets and
visionaries of all kinds are invited to
converge towards this so attractive
region of Morocco.
In the imposing building of the House of
Culture of Moulay Driss Zerhoune, as in
the other sites in the town, conferences
and exhibitions provide pleasure for the
visitors coming from all origins,
cultures and tendances. This event is
truly remarkable, as it is an authentic
hymn of praise to tolerance.
Songs, Dances and Traditional Music

Popular tradition
will fill the whole weekend of the
Festival. From the first rhythmic
clamours by the « ghaita aissaouia » who
will rise up the white lanes of Beni
Ammar, a labyrinth solidly anchored in
the arid hillside, to the cries of
children circumcised due to charity work
offering this ceremony to the poorest
families, all on this land of the region
of Tafilalt El Menzeh it will just be a
hubbub of joy.
To go to meet Morocco and its
unhabitants on the simple pretext of
taking part in the Beni Ammar donkey
Festival, especially when you are
attached to the values of the earth,
could perhaps be leaving on one of the
most enchanting voyages of a lifetime.
So don’t miss this chance !!

"Marbouh",
consacré plus bel âne de l’année
2012 au festival Beni Ammar, de
Zerhoun, région de Meknès, a été
vendu à 30.000 DH, devenant ainsi
l’âne le plus cher de l’histoire du
Maroc. Shahrukh Khan, a été classé
deuxième et Cristiano Ronaldo,
troisième plus bel âne de l’année.

Le bel âne, qui
appartenait à un pauvre porteur de
la région, vit depuis luxueusement
dans la ferme de son nouveau
propriétaire, où il a droit à un
traitement spécial. L’animal a pris
organisateurs veulent sensibiliser
la population locale aux bienfaits
du lait et du fromage extraits des
ânesses, ce dernier étant l’un des
plus chers au monde, précise Belemou. Le Maroc était le premier
exportateur mondial d’ânes jusqu’à
il y a une dizaine d’années. Les
principales races d’ânes existant
dans le pays sont les "Catalanes et
Poitevines". Aujourd’hui le nombre
d’ânes au Maroc est estimé à 962.000
têtes, contre plus d’un million
entre 2000 et 2005.
