Ingmar De Vos (BEL) was today
elected as President of the
Fédération Equestre
Internationale (FEI) by an
overwhelming majority in the
first round of voting, earning
98 votes out of a possible 131.
De Vos, 51, Secretary General of
the FEI since May 2011, was
elected to take charge of the
world governing body of
equestrian sport during this
morning’s session of the FEI
General Assembly in Baku (AZE).
The result was announced by HRH
Princess Haya, the outgoing
President, with the simple
words, “I am pleased to announce
we have a new FEI President,
Ingmar De Vos”. Her words were
met with prolonged applause from
close to 350 delegates
representing 91 National
Federations, stakeholders,
sponsors and international
media.
“I’m really very honoured and
overwhelmed by this enormous
support,” a clearly emotional De
Vos said, “and I would like to
thank you from the bottom of my
heart for your confidence. Baku
will be in my memory forever.
“Elections are always difficult,
as it splits a little bit the
family, but I guarantee that I
will be the president of all of
you, I will serve all the
members of our community and I
will work very hard to keep this
unity.”
He went on to thank his great
friend and mentor Jacky
Buchmann, who has recently been
re-elected as President of the
Belgian Equestrian Federation.
And finally, with great emotion,
he thanked outgoing President
Princess Haya.
“Words cannot explain what she
has done for our organisation.
She has shown leadership, she
has guided us through difficult
waters, she has innovated us,
she has modernised us. She has
left us with a great legacy and
I believe, together with many of
you, that it is our
responsibility to preserve the
legacy and go on with the
roadmap she has shown us. Words
are not enough to thank her.
Over the years we have become
good friends, and I am thankful
and grateful for your support.
Thank you from the bottom of my
heart.”
Congratulations from IOC
President
Shortly after his election, De
Vos received a letter of
congratulations from IOC
President Thomas Bach. “Please
accept my congratulations on
your election as President of
the International Equestrian
Federation. The IOC enjoys a
long-standing relationship with
FEI, its elected members and
administration. We are sure that
FEI will continue its growth
under your leadership. Your
previous experience in different
positions of the Equestrian
sports will be invaluable for
you in this new office. On
behalf of the IOC and the entire
Olympic Movement, I wish you
every success in the new role
you are undertaking.”
De Vos takes over the reins as
FEI President at the conclusion
of today’s FEI General Assembly
for a four-year term, and is
eligible for re-election for up
to three consecutive terms. He
has stated that he will resign
as Secretary General as soon as
he takes over the Presidency
this afternoon and will appoint
an interim Secretary General to
take over the role until a
permanent replacement is found.
The other candidates standing
for election were Pierre Durand
(FRA), Pierre Genecand (SUI),
John McEwen (GBR), and Ulf
Helgstrand (DEN). Helgstrand
withdrew his candidacy before
the vote, and a sixth candidate,
Javier Revuelta del Peral (ESP)
withdrew from the election
process in November.

A total of 131 voting boxes were
distributed to National
Federation delegates, with 131
valid ballots cast. A total of
91 National Federations present

proxies.
Ingmar De Vos (BEL)
Ingmar De Vos (51) holds degrees
in political science, business
administration and international
and European law, and started
his career as an advisor to the
Belgian Senate. He joined the
Belgian Equestrian Federation as
managing director in 1990, and
held the additional role of
Secretary General from 1997 to
2011.
During his time at the Belgian
National Federation, De Vos was
chef de mission for the Belgian
Equestrian Team at all FEI World
Equestrian Games™ from 1990 to
2010 and at several Olympic
Games. He was also Secretary
General of the European
Equestrian Federation from 2010,
the year the organisation was
formed, until 2011, when he
joined the FEI.

and the International Equestrian
Federation (FEI) in which the
current FEI President explains the
reasons why she will not stand for a
third mandate at the FEI.

Genecand, Swiss Businessman and keen
horseman had officially announced
his candidacy for the FEI Presidency
earlier in the year. Pierre E.
Genecand acknowledged the decision
of HRH Princess Haya:
“I would like to
personally congratulate HRH Princess
Haya on the tremendous work that she
has accomplished over the last 8
years as President of the FEI.
Under her
leadership, equestrian sport and the
FEI have made amazing progress and
all of us are thankful for her
unfailing commitment to making the
FEI the modern and robust governing
body that it is today. I wish
Princess Haya all the best for her
new commitments, notably in
humanitarian work.
I have been
preparing for a long time to meet
the challenges that would be
required of me to maintain
Equestrian Sports at the highest

World Equestrian Games Normandy 2014
to meet with all stakeholders of
Equestrian Sports and to hold
discussions with National
Federations. His programme will be
partly unveiled during the meeting
of the Alliance of International
Equestrian Journalists on the 31st
of August at 11am in the Press
Conference Room of the d’Ornano
Stadium, Caen.

After a degree in
Business, Pierre Genecand started a
career in international insurance
and finance. In 1982 he became the
owner and Chairman of the Board of
Directors of GESREP SA. Under his
lead, the firm rapidly became
extremely successful. GESREP was
sold to giant firm Aon in 2005.
His knowledge in
business and management coupled with
his 40-year experience in National
Jumping competitions lead Pierre
becoming President of the CHI Geneva
in 1989 and made a rapid decision to
relocate the show from the small Ice-hockey
ring, to the current gigantic
Exposition Hall. The allocation of
the 1996 FEI World Cup Final to
Geneva was unanimously voted by the
World Cup Committee. In 2004, after
15 years at the head of CHI Geneva,
Genecand handed the reins to Sophie
Mottu-Morel.
From 1991 to
2003, Pierre Genecand was a member
of the World Cup Committee. Together
with Max Ammann and all World Cup
organisers, they shaped the FEI
World Cup circuit.
Board Member of
Swiss Top Sports, the association of
the biggest sports events in
Switzerland. From 1999 to 2003

member of the Alliance of Jumping
Organisers (AJO).

has been the president of the Polo
Club Gstaad and Hublot Polo Gold Cup
since 2006.

Earlier today, I
notified the National Federations,
the FEI Bureau and the FEI staff
that, after a great deal of thought
and reflection, I have made the very
difficult decision not to stand for
a third term as FEI President.
This has been one
of the hardest decisions of my life.
My very first act in office in 2006
was to prepare a motion to limit the
term of the FEI President to two,
four-year terms. I reiterated that
view in my re-election campaign four
years later and again when some of
my supporters began advocating for a
statute change that would permit me
to run for a third term.
Although I had
always planned to leave office after
this term, my resolve was weakened
at the FEI General Assembly in 2013
when I was presented with a petition
signed by 100 National Federations
calling for an Extraordinary General
Assembly to change the FEI Statutes.
I gave more thought to the
possibility of a third term when the
Extraordinary General Assembly voted
to change the Statutes to permit it.
This
demonstration of support was a
humbling and truly huge moment in my
life. And, as I weighed the
possibilities in reaching this
difficult decision, the gratitude
and loyalty I felt to those who had
been so faithful to me was paramount
among the countless reasons
compelling me to consider a third
term.
Equestrian sport
has been and continues to be a
source of inspiration to me. Horses
and the relationship between a human
and the horse are as old as time
itself, and for me that relationship
will never lose its magic. Horses
and our community motivate the best
part of my soul. I have loved
serving this community, just as I
have loved being an athlete in our
family. And I have always felt that
the Olympic values are a source of
pride for all of us.
I adore the
friends I have made in the sport,
many of whom I have relied on in
office. My colleagues in the FEI, in
the National Federations, in the
Bureau and our Headquarters staff
have done so much to improve and
modernise this organisation in the
last eight years, and I would have
loved to continue to build on that
progress.
It would have
been beyond exciting for me to
continue to be part of this
institution that is now truly in a
position to reap the rewards of this
metamorphosis and to see all of the
continued work in that process be
rewarded.
Having said all
that, the factors that have led to
my decision not to seek a third term
are, for me, impossible to ignore. I
committed to a term limit, and that
commitment still weighs heavily on
me. However, most importantly, as I
said in the EGA, I needed to see if
a third term would work with my
family.
As always, I
continue to have the support of my
family, and yet, I am painfully
aware that their support for me
comes at a cost for them. Fate took
my own mother away from me when I
was three years of age. That
experience greatly influences my
efforts to strike the right
work-life balance with my own two
young children. I have always
managed this balance in the past,
but recent events have made me
question my ability to do so.
The situation in
my region is turbulent and desperate
at the moment. You will understand
that these are also my people and my
family, so recently much of the work
that I have balanced with my FEI
Presidency in the past has begun to
make itself a first priority. In the
last weeks, I have needed to put
aside some of my work for the FEI to
concentrate on humanitarian relief
to Gaza and other work in that
sector. And I feel that this is just
the beginning.
To fulfill my
commitments to humanitarian work and
to raise my children with the time
to love them seems truly
overwhelming; it is clear to me that
I cannot in good faith promise to
give my all in each of these areas
while also continuing to be the
hands-on President that the FEI
needs and deserves. After agonising
over these conflicting worries and
desires, I realise that my decision
cannot be put off any longer. For
the good of the FEI and most of all,
our community, this decision had to
be reached in good time to allow the
many excellent candidates to come
forward.
I have no doubt
that the future of the FEI is solid.
I am very proud of the many things
we were able to achieve together
during my time in office. I look
forward to an election campaign
focused on ideas for further
improvements. I will now be in a
position to focus totally on serving
the FEI until my last minute in
office and to leaving the house in
the best order for my successor.
I remain deeply
honored to have held this position
for eight years.

was elected as FEI President in 2006
in the first-ever contested election
for the FEI Presidency. She was
re-elected in 2010 in the first
contested election involving a
serving President.
Following her
election in 2006, Princess Haya
initiated a motion to limit the term
of the FEI President to two, four-year
terms, which was passed by the FEI
General Assembly and incorporated
into the FEI Statutes.
At the 2013 FEI
General Assembly in Montreux (SUI),
100 National Federations signed a
petition calling for an
Extraordinary General Assembly (EGA)
to change the FEI Statutes relating
to the Presidential term. An EGA was
held in Lausanne (SUI) in April of
this year and National Federations
voted overwhelming in support of a
change to the Statutes increasing
the maximum term in office of the
FEI President to three four-year
terms.
HRH Princess
Haya’s positions as IOC Member,
President of the International Horse
Sports Confederation, OIE Goodwill
Ambassador, and Honorary President
of Fegentri, the International
Federation of Gentlemen and Lady
Riders (in amateur racing), all end
with the completion of her term in
office as FEI President in December
2014.
The election for
the FEI Presidency takes place at
the General Assembly in Baku (AZE)
on 14 December 2014. The deadline
for candidates to register their
candidacy with the FEI Secretary
General is 1 September 2014.

Gstaad
accueillera le polo de très haut
niveau lors de la Hublot Polo Gold
Cup.
Le tournoi de
polo de Gstaad qui fête cette année
sa 19ème édition est rapidement
devenu incontournable. Pierre
Genecand, l’infatigable Président du
tournoi, œuvre toute l’année avec
son équipe pour présenter le
meilleur du sport dans un cadre
idyllique. Depuis ses débuts en
1996, l’événement s’est rapidement
imposé sur le circuit européen. En
2014, le tournoi accueillera à
nouveau quelques-uns des meilleurs
joueurs du monde dont Eduardo et
Frankie Menendez (ARG), habitués du
tournoi.
Les matchs se
dérouleront sur les terrains de
l’aéroport de Gstaad Saanen
entretenus toute l’année dans le
seul but d’offrir la meilleure
qualité de sol pour les 3 jours de
compétition. Cette année encore, de
prestigieux partenaires ont
renouvelé leur soutien à l’événement
: Hublot, sponsor titre depuis 2008,
Banque Baring Brothers Sturdza SA,
E.I. Sturdza Investment Funds,
Gstaad Palace, Vicomte A., McLaren
Geneva, Perrier Jouët, Dunhill et
Nespresso pour n’en citer que
quelques-uns.
Chaque année,
plus de 6000 spectateurs assistent
gratuitement aux matchs ainsi qu’à
la traditionnelle parade des
joueurs, le vendredi après-midi,
dans les rues de Gstaad. La tente
VIP accueille plus d’un millier de
gastronomes qui allient le plaisir
des yeux à celui du palais, grâce au
Gstaad Palace qui propose pendant le
weekend, les mets les plus raffinés
aux invités. Très attendue
également, la soirée de Gala du
samedi organisée dans la tente VIP,
point d’orgue de la manifestation.
Parmi les animations, Silvan Zingg,
l’un des plus grands pianistes de
Boogie Woogie d’Europe. La soirée se
poursuivra jusqu’au petit matin avec
le DJ du GreenGo, le célèbre
night-club de Gstaad qui se
délocalisera le temps d’une soirée !
En 2013, au terme
d’un match plein de suspense, c’est
le Team Gstaad Palace qui s’était
imposé face au Team Hublot. Cet
exploit pourrait-il être renouvelé
en 2014 ? Rendez-vous du 21 au 24
août à Gstaad !

CANDIDACY FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF THE FEI
Dear Friends, the FEI
Extraordinary General Assembly
held in Lausanne on April 29th,
aside of the annual Sports
Forum, adopted a change of
statute permitting FEI
Presidents to now stand for
three terms of 4 years instead
of 2. The vote
with a show of hands was without
appeal as only 3 National
Federations voted against the
change of statute.
After the vote, HRH Princess
Haya bint Al Hussein announced
that she would be a candidate
for the next elections taking
place in Dubai on 14th of
December 2014.
I would like to confirm that I
am maintaining my candidacy
submitted on February 17th 2014
and which had been officially
registered by the FEI.
The road is still long until the
elections. 2014 will be a year
of major sporting deadlines. I
am enthusiastically pursuing my
election campaign throughout the
world on the occasion of my
numerous trips.
I am deeply convinced that I
could bring a renewed energy to
the FEI in many aspects be it in
sports, commercial matters or
media promotion, not to mention
the welfare of the horse.
